One point of a stops binding: what a number exactly at at paints, and what the stretches on either side of it start or end with.
Between two points the value moves from the left point's above to the right point's below (numbers linearly, colors per red, green, blue and alpha component). Below the first point every value paints the first point's below; above the last, the last point's above; exactly at a point, its value. below and above default to value, so a plain ramp names only at and value; giving them separately draws a jump at the point. Points need not be evenly spaced.
This is the model Cytoscape's continuous mappings use, so a mapping read from a Cytoscape file keeps its exact meaning.
