Measurement = "categorical" | "ordinal" | "quantitative" | "time" | string & object

What a column's values measure, which decides how a binding that names no scale draws it.

  • "categorical" -- names of groups with no order: one color per value.
  • "ordinal" -- groups with an order, such as Low, Medium, High: colors and sizes follow it.
  • "quantitative" -- amounts: a ramp, or a size range.
  • "time" -- points in time.

OPEN UNION: values may be added in a minor release; treat one you do not know as no measurement.
